Poker Omaha Rules

Omaha is one of the variants of poker, and as a variant of this card game, it is fast gaining popularity not only in land-based casinos but also in the Internet. Now, many players are trying their luck in this game, hoping to take home the pot. Be one of these lucky players, but first, know the rules of Omaha.

Although it is closely related to Texas Hold'em, they have their own differences.

The Start of the Game
The dealer first shuffles a deck of 52-cards before the player on his left places the little blind or the first blind on the table. After the first blind is the second blind or the big blind, which is placed by the second player to the dealer’s left. The big blind amounts to the smallest bet placed, and the small blind is half or one-third of the big blind. Usually, the blinds’ amounts are already decided upon before the game starts.

After the blinds, the dealer then deals each player four cards (known as the hole cards or pocket cards), which is placed face-down in front of each player, and herein lies its big difference with Texas Hold’em, which only has two faced-down cards per player.

The Start of Betting
After the two players to the left of the dealer posted their blinds, betting commences where the players have these choices - call, raise, or fold. After all players have placed their bets and have either called, raised, or folded, burning of the card is done, which is when the dealer gets rid of the card on top of the deck to guarantee the players that no one has seen the card that was disposed of. Burning of the card thwarts cheating.

The flop happens when the dealer places on the table three cards that are facing up, and these cards are called the community cards. The second round of betting takes place after the flop, and the betting is done in the same clockwise direction, from the player on the dealer’s left to the player on the dealer’s right.

The turn or the fourth street comes after the second betting round wherein the topmost card of the deck is discarded and the fourth community card is dealt face-up by the dealer. Third betting round takes place.

The final and fifth community card is dealt by the dealer face-up and placed on the table after discarding the topmost card again. This part is called the fifth street, also known as the river.

The Conclusion of the Game
On the table are the five face-up community cards and each player’s four pocket or hole cards, which are kept private from other players. Now, the second main difference of Omaha from Texas Hold’em is this - the player has to choose three cards from the community cards and two cards from his hole cards to make the best five-card hand possible. Final and fourth betting round happens after this.

It is either the Omaha poker player who made the first wager or the Omaha poker player who last raised who will first show his five-card hand to other players before the remaining players show theirs.  The one who has the best five-hand card brings home the money.
