Poker Texas Holdem Rules

The game of poker has been around for many years now and is among one of the favorite card games in the world.  Because of its popularity, many variants have been invented to make the game more interesting, one of which is Texas Hold’em which soon became the most popular among the variants of poker.

Understanding the rules of Texas Hold’em is easy, but a player, especially a newbie, would still need a lot of practice to master the game of Texas Hold’em.

The Start of the Game
The game starts when the dealer shuffles a standard deck of cards, consisting of 52 cards.  The first player on the left of the dealer then puts in the blind, which is a predetermined amount of money.  The posting of blinds is done before the cards are dealt.  The first blind is placed by the first player to the dealer’s left, the amount of which is half or a third of the littlest bet.  After the first player posts his blind, the second player to the left of the dealer then puts in the big blind, which is equals to the littlest bet.

After this, the hole cards or pocket cards are then dealt, and these are the two cards given to each player which are placed face down.

The Start of Betting
Betting then takes place after the big blind is posted, and betting starts with the player to the little and big blind’s left.  Here, the player can then call the bet (which is to see the bet), raise the bet, or fold (also called muck).  In a clockwise direction, the betting continues until all players have wagered.  Once the first round of betting is done, the dealer then discards or “burns” the card on top of the deck, and this is done to make sure that none of the players have seen the top card.  After this comes the flop wherein the dealer deals three faced-up cards (also known as community cards) on the table.

After the flop comes another round of betting, and this starts with the player on the dealer’s left again.  Here, the players can check (passing the bet), call (seeing the bet), raise the bet, or fold.

The fourth street, also called the turn, then comes after the flop, which is when the dealer discards another card (the card on top of the deck) and then places the fourth faced-up card on the table.  The third betting round then commences after the turn.

Fifth street or the river comes after the turn wherein the dealer burns the top card on the deck and places on the table the fifth faced-up card, the last faced-up card.

The Conclusion of the Game
Now, the players then have to form the best five-card hand using three of the five faced-up cards on the table and the two cards dealt to them (the pocket cards) before the first round of betting.  After this, the fourth betting round occurs, which is the final betting round.

Once the final bets are placed, the players then show their five-card hand combinations, and it is either the player who placed the first bet or the player who placed the last raise who will reveal his hand.  Whoever has the best hand takes home the pot.
